EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It was developed by Francine Shaprio, PhD as a technique to treat people who have experienced trauma. She noticed that eye movements decrease the intensity of some thoughts. She developed the protocol and treatment method, which has been described to create mental process similar to REM sleep.
The treatment occurs in several stages starting with identifying upsetting events, developing coping mechanisms to assist during the processing then moving to identifying negative beliefs related to the event and bodily sensations activated and finally to the bilateral stimulation. Eye movements or other bilateral techniques are used to activate both sides of the brain alternately. While the bilateral stimulation is occurring the brain goes through a healing process of removing a block to healing and then beginning the healing process. The coping mechanisms can be used throughout to help tolerate the process. Then both the client and clinician monitor the process of healing and continue on as necessary with bilateral stimulation in following sessions until the intensity has decreased to a manageable or non-existent level. Very little talking about the upsetting event is necessary for resolution. While this can be a very intense process, it is very fast compared to straight talk therapy.
This form of therapy is well established as effective treatment for single-issue trauma, PTSD, and other upsetting and life disturbing problems. It can be used for phobias, anxiety, depression, as well as other issues that may be keeping you from living your life fully. I've been researching options to do "Skype Counseling" for some time now and I finally set up what I believe is the best option. Although it's called Skype Counseling, I won't be using Skype since it's not confidential. There are many considerations when it comes to starting telehealth. I think this is the wave of the future so I wanted to go ahead and offer this option to people who may not be able to come in person. I found a great website that really covered every base. Things that i needed to consider were:

With all that in mind I've decided on a great option that is free to use by clients. I will now offer this option to any existing or future clients. Since I am working on earning my license to practice counseling in Oregon, I am only able to offer this service to clients in Oregon or Washington or out of the country under certain circumstances. State boards do not allow practicing across state lines.
I hope that this additional service will help people who would have found getting counseling to be prohibitive otherwise. I am especially thinking about people who live in areas in which there aren't counselors, new parents who have difficulty traveling, and people who may have anxiety going to counseling in person. This may also be beneficial to people who travel. Let me know if you'd like to give it a try. This can be used as the only meeting method or as a part of a combination of services.
